Give Me This Mountain

Give Me This Mountain
By George Thurlow

Help me to remember Lord
The battle is not mine;
In struggles and when under siege
Help me hold the line.

I won't surrender to circumstance,
But remain surrendered to You...
For the only way to victory
Is to hang on and yield to You.

Give me spiritual vision
To see the picture as You do.
Don't let me faint or falter,
But keep my eyes on You.

Lord don't let me fail You
Or cause You any shame.
Even in the chaos
Let me glorify Your name.

In the midst of confusion
Let me be a shining light...
So that others may come to know
You're my strength and might.

Don't let me spoil my witness
Nor murmur and complain...
For unbelievers are watching
How I handle pressure and pain.

Keep my mind in perfect peace
When all around is falling apart.
Let me rest in confidence,
Bring a calmness to my heart.

No giant is unconquerable
When I walk on a heavenly plain;
I can enjoy the Sonshine
Even in the clouds and rain.

Holy Spirit refreshen me
As I drink from the bubbling fountain
Then like Caleb I can boldly say
"Give to me this mountain".

The Valley Of Decision

Valley Of Decision
By George Thurlow

Multitudes in the valley of decision,
There's no time for delay.
Rescue all the perishing
For Christ is on the way.

The day in nearly over;
The sun's sinking in the sky.
Darkness will be o'er the earth
In sin unsaved shall die.

Hearken now unto His command
To be fisher's of men.
The portals of Glory shall open;
The day of the Lord's at hand.

I hear the sound of distant thunder;
The clouds are rolling back.
The King has left His royal throne
For all is right on track.

The archangel is poised and ready;
The trump is to His lips.
Believer's man the lifeboats;
Snatch souls from the devil's grip.

Multitudes in the valley of decision,
On the brink of eternity,
One step away from the fiery pit,
It's up to you and me.

Treasure Hunt

Treasure Hunt
By George Thurlow

I am going on a treasure hunt
Though not digging up the sod,
Nor panning in the mountain streams,
But searching the Word of God.

Nuggets of wisdom this Book contains
Makes me happy, wealthy and wise:
Each jot and tittle is a gem
Should never be despised.

For hidden in each line and phrase
Is wealth beyond compare:
Each Word holds a secret key
To heaven's jewels so rare.

Worldly folks crave bars of gold
And after riches lust,
But on the streets of heaven
Gold is just but dust.

I'd rather be the poorest of heaven
Than the richest man on earth,
For without the Word living in my heart
I would have no worth.

But God in His infinite mercy
Stooped down to rescue me
Then gave me a Book to guide my life
And to enrichen me.

So each day I'll search the Scriptures
Discover nuggets of heavenly gold:
Each hunt is a new adventure
The Living Word does not grow old.

Priorities

Priorities
 By George Thurlow

Be careful, don't get too busy
That you cast the Lord aside,
And go off in your own direction
No longer in Him abide.

It can happen ever so gradually
Till one day you wake up and see,
How far you drifted from Him
And are swamped by stormy seas.

Don't get so busy making a living
You forget the right way to live.
Don't get so focused on the worldly cares
You don't have time for Him.

Make sure you put the Kingdom first
And seek His righteousness.
When your priority is on Jesus Christ
You will find your happiness.

You will never have satisfaction
If on an earthly plain you trod,
For all the needs your soul does crave
Are those precious things of God.

Please don't neglect the Savior
For He gave His very life,
And He expects no less from us
Then a living sacrifice.

Matthew 6:33

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you".

Fair Weather Friend?

Fair Weather Friend?
By George Thurlow

When by fire my faith is tested
And struggles seem never to end;
I pray I won't be to You
Just another fair weather friend.

Oh it's so easy when the day is bright
And my heart feels light and free,
To burst out in song and melody
In endless praise of thee:

But in the shadow of the growing storm
When clouds seem to cover all,
Will the barometer of my heart
Drastically dip and fall?

Will I bend like a humble willow:
Or snap like a proud pine tree?
When the wind is violently raging
Will I still trust in thee?

I pray That I'll be faithful,
Like Paul to the very end.
Regardless of the weather
I remain your loyal friend.

Lifes' Most Embarrassing Moment?

Lifes' Most Embarrassing Moment?
By George Thurlow

Shortly after the rapture,
The meeting in the sky,
There will be a judgment
Where believer's deeds are tried.

Commissions and omissions
Will be openly revealed:
All the acts that were done in secret
Examined and unsealed.

All our works will then be tested
And in the fire tossed,
Determining if there be reward
Or that we suffer loss.

Attitudes and motives
Will equally be tried:
Were they done for the Master's glory
Or the praise in other's eyes?

Will our work survive the fire?
Will they come forth as precious stones?
Or burn up like hay and stubble
A heap of ashes all alone?

Will we hang our head in sorrow?
Will we cry out in sore disgrace?
Will we be extremely embarrassed
To look on the Savior's face?

Lord help me now upon this earth
To examine everything.
Right here in all I do or say
Let it be done as for my King.

I pray upon our meeting
At the Bema Seat,
I'll be loaded down with golden crowns
To lay them at your feet.

2 Corinthians 5:10
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad".

The Valley Of The Shadow Of Death

The Valley Of The Shadow Of Death
By George Thurlow

I will not fear or worry
What death can do to me;
It's just a mode of transport
From earth straight home to Thee.

It has no power to hold me
For Christ has paid the price;
And in His hands He holds the keys
Of eternal life.

The shadow of death looks dark and drear
Gloomy, grim and gray,
But behind each and every shadow
There are Sonlight rays!

And yea though I may walk through it
I'll never be alone,
And I will fear no evil
While on this journey to the throne.

For my Lord is able
To deliver me safely there.
He'll lead me through the valley
This heavenly thoroughfare.

Casting Down Imaginations

Casting Down Imaginations
By George Thurlow

Are you anticipating trouble
And thinking the very worst?
Are you extending an invitation
To those problems you rehearse?

"What if" and "supposing"
Can so occupy your time
The faithfulness of our mighty God
Is displaced right from your mind.

Imaginations become reality
If from the mind they are not cast:
For the devil is more than willing
To bring those things to past.

Change your way of thinking
For worry is unbelief.
It's one of many strongholds
That hinders our relief.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

All Creation Seeks Your Face

All Creation Seeks Your Face
By George Thurlow

All creation seeks your face
And knows from whence it comes:
Even a simple flower
Turns its face towards the Son.

Romans 1:20
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Attuned To The Trumpet

Luke 21:28

28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Attuned To The Trumpet

By George Thurlow

Perilous times are upon us,
But I have no need to fear...
For there's a hope within me
That gives me peace down here.

I know that I can trust Him
For I've proved Him o'er and o'er...
In the midst of instability
He is steadfast, able, sure.

While the world is in perplexity,
Hearts failing because of fear,
I gaze into the heavenlies
For His coming draweth near.

When chaos settles on the earth
Nowhere to run and hide,
I'll be transported to the Throne Room
In the twinkling of an eye.

I'm looking for that City
Whose Builder and Maker is God.
I'm free from all attachments
To this earthly sod.

I keenly keep my ear attuned
To the trumpet sound.
My hope is in the Savior,
For I'm homeward bound.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

When The Shackles Fell Away

When The Shackles Fell Away

By George Thurlow

Never will I ever
Forget that blessed day
When my soul was liberated
And the shackles fell away.

Out of pain and darkness,
Into His marvelous light,
He reached down and touched me,
And I received my sight.

From dreariness, despondency,
Depression and despair,
The Gentle Shepherd rescued me
And showed me that He cared.

Then a flame began to flicker
Deep within my heart;
I had desire to live again...
Hope became the spark.

A strange warmness filled this vessel
That once was icy cold;
I felt a sense of belonging,
A part of the Master's fold.

Soon I was making melodies
From somewhere deep within...
Singing praises to my Savior
Who set me free from sin.

I was bursting with new energy,
Excited now to live...
Full of love and gratitude
Just wanting to give and give.

Oh never will I ever
Forget that blessed day,
When my burdens were lifted
And the shackles fell away.

"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."
John 8:36

For The Joy Set Before Him

For The Joy Set Before Him

By George Thurlow

For the joy set before Him
Christ endured the cross.
Though His soul was exceeding sorrowful,
He willingly paid the cost.

To lead many sons to glory
From the foundation was ordained.
Through death destroyed the power
Of the devil and his domain.

He tasted death for every man,
Taking away the sting.
Spoiling principalities and powers,
Christ the King of Kings.

Delivering all the captives
As He ascended up on high.
Fulfilling the blessed promise
That we too shall never die.

The Sacrificial Lamb

The Sacrificial Lamb
By George Thurlow

It was my sin that put You there;
I sent You to the Cross.
I was the guilty one;
But it was You who suffered loss.

It was I who was sinful,
And You the innocent Lamb.
I deserved the punishment,
But it was Your Blood that ran.

I was the one who owed the debt,
But it was You who paid the price.
I obtained a pardon;
You willingly gave Your life.

I was vile and unworthy,
And You the perfect One.
I became a child of God
Because of what you've done.

For The Son Will Rise

For The Son Will Rise

By George Thurlow

In the darkness of Good Friday
All hopes and dreams were gone,
Those of them that knew Him
Grief stricken and forlorn.

How quickly now forgotten
All the words that Jesus spoke,
Of the things that soon would happen
And of the blessed hope.

Dismayed and fully discouraged
They were blinded to the fact,
This wasn't the final curtain,
But the opening act!

It was only the beginning
Of greater things to come,
For Christ was not defeated...
A battle had been won.

On resurrection morning
Who could believe their eyes?
For the Lord had risen
And walked the earth alive.

It wasn't the nails that held Him
There upon old Calvary's tree,
But love beyond all measure
So deep towards you and me.

Joy came in the morning
For the Son did rise.
There sprang a hope eternal...
We too shall never die.

For those who call upon Him,
And invite the Savior in,
There is a new day dawning
With a life set free from sin.

The veil will then be lifted
You'll see with spiritual eyes.
Darkness will be driven...
In your heart the Son will rise.

Disarmed

Disarmed
By George Thurlow

The enemy has been disarmed,
A spectacle is he:
Stripped of power by the Blood
Christ shed upon the tree.

Demonic thugs are now dethroned,
Divested of their right.
Darkness has been overcome
Through the holiness of His light.

Christ openly made a show of them
And put them all to shame.
We too can be triumphant
Through authority of His Name.

He spoiled all principalities
And set the captives free.
No longer bound by satan's chains
We walk in liberty.

Colossians 2:15
"And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

My Times Are In Thy Hands

My Times Are In Thy Hands
By George Thurlow

Lord, my appointment book is open
Schedule me as You please.
I make myself available
My time belongs to Thee.

My daily plans and doings
Are subject to be changed:
For You're Master and Director
And Your hands hold the reins.

At the dawning of a new day
I listen for Your voice,
And take my days'assignment:
Your will is my choice.

Lord You are priority
My will takes back seat.
Where ever it is You send me
That is where I'll place my feet.

I do not sit and ponder
"What will I do today?",
Because I know that You will guide me
As I go about my way.

Perhaps You'll send me out to visit
Someone feeling low,
Who needs a bit of encouraging
To get back on the road.

Or maybe just a kind deed
For someone who is down
To place a smile upon their face
Wipe away the tears and frown.

Or even share the Good News
To a neighbor who is lost
And tell them of Christ's wondrous love
Displayed upon  the Cross.

I know not what today will bring
But I worry not an ounce:
For my appointment book is open
The schedule to be announced.

Poem inspired by a sermon given by my pastor
Rev. Merle L. Mitchell of Faith Lighthouse Assembly of God
Old Orchard Beach, Maine
based on Psalm 31:15 given on 3/29/98.

God Of The Second Chance

God Of The Second Chance
By George Thurlow

Today you may have failed Him.
You have tripped and fallen down,
But God in His love and mercy
Will lift you from the ground.

The God of the second chance,
Full of patience, full of grace,
Is ready to forgive you
When you repent and seek His face.

You stand among the many
Of the Bible's great
Who disobeyed instruction
And wound up in dire straits.

You're in the company of Jonah,
God's will he did not wish.
Because of disobedience
Was swallowed by a fish.

And then impetuous Peter
Ready to tackle the whole world,
Wimped out at the accusations
Of a little girl.

Even Abraham the patriarch
Can't be set aside
For he called his wife his sister
In order to save his hide.

So stop sniffling and whining,
Your fall's not permanent.
God's still willing to use you:
Get up and go repent.
